Chapter 5
They were up early and left the hotel after a quick shower to have breakfast at a twenty-four hour fast food restaurant at the border. Neither of them spoke while they picked at rubbery croissants and washed down the shreds with strong coffee that tasted of plastic.
Julian raised his hand to hide a mile-wide yawn. “So…what about equipment?”
Romeo raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Julian shrugged. “Just that you’re obviously not going to wear your usual all-black, cashmere-and-cargo pants gear when we do this.”
Romeo flashed a disarming smile. “Unless we go shopping first.”
Julian stared at him. “You’ve got to be kidding. Right?”
Romeo continued to stare at him with an unsettling grin, then he winked. “Yes. I am kidding. We won’t need much in terms of equipment and I don’t think we need to worry about our outfits. In fact, plain clothes might be the best camouflage as they will help us blend in if we get spotted.”
Julian groaned.
Frowning, Romeo peered into his paper cup, then he gulped down some of its content and pulled a face. “What’s up?”
“Nothing. Uh…I just don’t like the idea of being spotted by a spotty teenage student who is haunting the aisles at night.”
Romeo chuckled. “I know, baby. Me either, but we’ll be fine. You’ll see.”
“Hm. I just hope you’re right.” Julian eyed the last half-inch of coffee in his own cup, shrugged, and drained it. He tried—and failed—to suppress a shudder.
Picking up on it, Romeo smirked. “You’re finally getting used to the good stuff, baby, huh?”
Julian rolled his eyes. “Seriously, even the brew we get at the FBI is better than this.” He grabbed the empty cups and set them on the tray, along with the leftover food. “All right. Shall we?”
Romeo huffed out a breath, then he pushed to his feet. “Yes.”
It was just past four when they arrived at the school grounds. Romeo directed Julian down a lane off the main road that barely deserved the name. Julian was grateful for their choice of vehicle when he reversed the big SUV along the narrow path and then carefully backed it into a space where trees and tall grass would keep it hidden from view. “At least I know now why you insisted we get this car,” he muttered and undid his belt, then Romeo’s.
Romeo grinned. “Always prepared, remember? I thought you’d used to be a boy scout.”
“Funny. Not.” Julian grabbed the flashlight they’d bought in the small shop at the border, then he got out of the car and went around it to join Romeo on the other side. “All right. Where do we go from here?” He glanced at the arrangement of big, chunky buildings that he could just about make out behind the greenery.
“That one over there.” Romeo indicated a dark red brick house just a few yards away from them, right where the woods ended. It was smaller than the other buildings and wore a dress of thick, green ivy that had made its way as far up as the roof.
